The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to engage in a working relationship to address the underlying causes of disease in order to determine how and why illness is occurring. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors that leads to personalized treatment plans in order to optimize individual patient health & outcomes.
A single condition may have many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual by looking at genetic predisposition, environmental exposures, nutritional status, gut & microbiome health, hormone health, relationships, stress, life experiences, sleep quality and patterns and movement

Sublingual immunotherapy, often called allergy drops or SLIT, is an allergy therapy that works by helping your body build tolerance to the substance(s) that cause your allergies. SLIT works similarly to traditional "allergy shots", but alternatively is a more practical and painless method by providing a precise dose of liquid drops under the tongue. Over time, your immune system becomes desensitized to the allergen, thereby eliminating or reducing the allergy symptoms you experience.
Each prescription is personalized to your specific allergies and severity so you can get a precise type and optimal dose of medication. Allergy drops contain increasing amounts of allergens over time that trigger your reactions — enough to stimulate your immune system, but not enough to cause a reaction. Sublingual immunotherapy safely and effectively treats a broad range of allergies, including dust mites, mold, animals, foods, and seasonal pollens like grass, trees, and ragweed.
The goal of sublingual immunotherapy drops is to train your immune system to stop reacting to what you're allergic to. Patients love the convenience of allergy drops since they can take them at home or wherever they are.
Some allergy related conditions commonly treated with SLIT include: allergic rhinitis, hay fever, atopic dermatitis/eczema, asthma, food allergies, peanut allergy, pet allergies, mold allergies, candida allergy, seasonal/environmental allergies, eosinophilic esophagitis, chronic sinusitis, and others.
We recommend patients take two doses daily for 3-5 years. Treatment length may vary based on allergy severity and type, and how well people follow treatment guidelines. Many people feel better within a few months, but continuing treatment through all phases is necessary to help you stay symptom-free after your allergy drop treatment is complete.
Benefits:
- Symptom relief: Allergy drops treat the underlying cause of your allergies, not just the symptoms — meaning long-term benefits you can't get from temporary medications.
- Convenience: Take allergy drops at home or wherever you are.
Less medication: Most patients need less medication within a few months. Many report no longer needing allergy medication after completing therapy.
- Lower cost: Typically cost less over time than shots or many medications. Most patients need only a few clinic visits the first year, then once every 6-12 months.

Here at Elixir, our Functional Medicine practitioners aim to address the root cause of disease, especially among chronic complex conditions. As opposed to suppressing symptoms further down the chain of disease, we use the functional medicine approach of first asking “why?”. By looking for the root cause of illness, we focus our treatments as far up the chain of disease possible. We do this by assessing underlying factors such as environmental toxins, nutrition, micronutrient status, gut health, lifestyle, sleep & exercise, genetic individuality, communication & connection, stress management, and many other factors. We understand that the body is not a set of disparate parts and systems, but rather a complex, interconnected set of systems that work together holistically. Furthermore, we apply this holistic model under the reality that every person is unique, and therefore treatments must be individualized to cater to that person. Some of the many complex conditions our practitioners treat include fatigue, insomnia, anxiety & depression, gastrointestinal disorders, autoimmune conditions, hormonal disturbances, cardiovascular disease, concussions, metabolic and weight concerns, environmental and food allergies, inflammatory disorders, and many others. Here at Elixir, our Functional Medicine practitioners are very passionate about what they do and approach each individual with great care and compassion.
